Arriving in the USA:
It took a few months after our marriage for me to get my visa. When we got married Abhay (my husband) was doing his residency in internal medicine at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. A bachelor until then he had a room in the dorm.Food was free and unlimited. Any travel was via public transport. Most of the income was neatly tucked into savings .
When I finally got my visa my father accompanied me from Mumbai to Chicago. Upon arrival at Chicago airport Abhay was in a rather elated and playful mood. As we were hauling our bags at the terminal he looked at us and said “ doosri baayko bhetaaylaa aanali ahe “ !! ( I have brought my other wife to meet you !) 🥴
It was as if a roadside bomb had exploded! My father stopped right there as if braking hard and looked at him in shock . He would have turned right back and taken me home had Abhay not got scared of the look on dad’s face and promptly confessed “ I got a new car”. He was referring to the car as his “other wife”. A brand new sparkling deep blue Honda Accord was proudly parked in the airport garage. He had kept it a surprise till I arrived. Little did he know that it would become my “other spouse” rather than remain his other wife. 😀
Today’s saree is a 35 year old printed chiffon from Garden Vareli. Garden sarees were all time favorites. They came in beautiful colors. Required no fuss care. And were affordable at the time in my meager stipend during residency.
