Vidarbha: Part 6

In Vidarbha, tussar weaving is done in four districts : Bhandara, Nagpur, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli.

Vidarbha tussar and Karvati Kinar are not interchangeable terms. Not all Vidarbha tussars are Karvati Kinars. 

Chandrapur and Gadchiroli districts have their own weaving clusters of tussar sarees, though not Karvati kathis ( kinars). These are woven with tussar yarn but do not have the saw tooth border so these are not Karvati kinar.

Today’s saree is one such Vidarbha tussar in a light ochre yellow shade with a woven border in black thread. This is a very traditional saree from Vidarbha with the ghicha bands alternating with plain tussar  and black threadwork striped bands. It has a lovely golden sheen that the camera does not do justice to.
