Vidarbha: Part 7
The Non Karvati tussars from Vidarbha may not be known to consumers by their name , yet they are ubiquitous. You may not be aware that some of the tussar sarees sitting in your closet actually are made from Vidarbha tussar.
These may not be in their “off-the-loom” state. What I mean is after the weaving is completed they may have been procured by artisans outside Maharashtra for additional treatment such as printing or painting. Today’s saree is one such tussar which is not a Karvati Kathi( Kinar) yet very much a Vidarbha woven saree using local tussar that was then printed with Bagru technique in Jaipur district of Rajasthan. Bagru print involves use of carved wooden blocks and dyes made from natural ingredients like indigo, pomegranate, madder, turmeric etc.
The saree I am wearing is in a delightful dusky lavender shade. Distinguished yet understated. Comfortable to carry around all day at work. And one more thing I love about it is that all creases on it can be ironed away easily at the end of the day making it look crisp and new again !
