Celebrating Women Physicians

#NationalWomenPhysiciansDay

If society will not admit of a woman’s free development, then society must be remodeled.

Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell

Dr Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States in 1849.

February 3rd marks the birthday of this pioneering woman who initiated the movement that helped other women gain entry and equality in the field of medicine. It has been designated as National Women Physicians Day to celebrate the accomplishments of Dr Blackwell and all the female physicians everywhere. On this occasion I am also reminded of Dr Anandibai Joshi who was the first Indian woman to get a medical degree from an American university. Her story is filled with unimaginable hardships and a tragic end. Yet remains a source of inspiration for thousands who came after her.

What it takes for a woman to become a physician while playing all the traditional roles, only each of these women knows.  Here’s a toast to my fellow women physicians. It’s your day to celebrate and take pride in your achievements. A very Happy Women Physicians Day to you ๐Ÿฅ‚๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‚

Today’s saree to work was a Bengal cotton silk in dusky green color with Bankura horses woven all over. A tinge of mustard and jari along with a contrast of black threadwork adds a finishing touch to the design. The terracotta Bankura horses from west Bengal have their independent GI tag and carry religious and artistic significance. A weave from the same region adopting that motif is a beautiful meeting point of two forms of art.
