Baaton Baaton Mein: Part 1

Baaton Baaton Mein: Part 1

Language: Part 1

Last evening around the time of sunset I opened the door to the balcony adjoining my bedroom. It is usually a peaceful time to soak in the outdoors while still in the comfort of home. The rain clouds spanned the entire sky and had spared no opening for the sun to peep through. There was no puddle on the terrace of the building across because it had not rained for the entire day. No puddle, no birds coming for their pleasure dip. I looked around and glanced upon the mango tree that stands next to my balcony seat. Living by myself here for the last two months this tree has slowly become my only companion when I am home. Every time my gaze turns to the glorious clusters of its leaves rustling against the breeze, a warm feeling fills the heart. I acknowledge the presence of the tree and a silent conversation with it ensues. I can feel that the tree acknowledges my presence and we are both at peace standing there. There is no need for words. Just happy that the other person is there. We have become buddies. The friendship has a healing and rejuvenating effect. Just a few moments are sometimes enough to invigorate and wash out feelings of being alone.

Yesterday a thought crossed my mind. How easily I formed a bond with this tree. Why does it not happen so naturally and effortlessly when I meet new people every day? Why does it take a few times to meet before I know them? Why does it take conversations to know them ? And even after long conversations it rarely reaches the same level of mutual understanding as it has with the tree. Why?

The answer immediately followed the question. Because the bond between the tree and me transcended the intellect. It was at the level of pure awareness. There was no division of species, gender, age, appearance, properties, faculties or such things. There was no give or take. No expectation and no judgment. It was love in its purest form. An awareness that was pregnant with compassion and goodwill.

I was reminded of Sant Tukaram’s words.
Vrukshvalli amha soyari vanachare.

Last evening I got a first hand experience and could understand Tukoba’s words like never before.

If you are interested please check my old post from July 2022 I have elaborated on this abhang.
