Tulsidas Jayanti

August 11, 1511
Tulsidas, the great poet saint was born on this day in Uttar Pradesh, India. It was a saptami in the month of Shravan by Hindu calendar that year and also this year. He was a great devotee of Lord Rama and is credited with thousands of poems called Dohe. His major literary contribution lies in Ramcharitmanas, which is the version of the epic Ramayana in the Awadhi language. A more popular amongst his works is the Hanuman Chalisa which comprises of 40 couplets in praise of Rama’s dutiful servant Hanuman.

Tulsidas initiated the practice of Ram Lila, the enactment of Ramayan.

Tulsidas lived during the reign of the Mughal emperor Akbar and history tells of an incident when the emperor ordered Tulsidas to be imprisoned for refusing to perform a miracle.

Sankatmochan Hanuman temple in the holy city of Benares was established by him. Legend says he saw the deity( Hanuman) at this site. Tulsi ghat on the banks of the Ganga river in the city is named after him. He left his mortal body in the same city at the age of 111 in 1623 on July 30th. This was also in the month of Shravan.

In a day or so I will share in a follow up to this post a few thoughts on the Hanuman Chalisa. Watch out for this.
